More than 15 jobs have been secured as a cherished Somerset engineering business, long favored by the Royal Family, has been saved from the brink of collapse.
SFM Technology Ltd, a historic fruit machinery company that had entered administration due to financial difficulties, has been acquired by Bramley Precision Aerospace Ltd. The new owners have purchased SFM’s assets, goodwill, and intellectual property, ensuring the continuation of this esteemed local business.
Established in 1985 as Somerset Fruit Machinery, the company began by designing bespoke fruit harvesting machinery for apple and blackcurrant growers. Over four decades, it built a respected reputation in the specialist agricultural machinery sector, supplying customers both in the UK and overseas. In 2012, SFM Technology was awarded a coveted Royal Warrant for supplying fruit harvesting machinery to the royal household—testament to its quality and prestige.

Expanding beyond agriculture, SFM evolved into aerospace and advanced manufacturing, applying its expertise to precision engineering. The company developed capabilities across CAD design, prototyping, CNC machining, laser and waterjet cutting, welding, fabrication, 3D printing, and complex assembly work. It supported leading aerospace and defence firms internationally, alongside specialist engineering clients.
This mastery and skilled workforce attracted Graham and Emma Bramley, who run Bramley Engineering, a family business specializing in bespoke cranes and lifting equipment for utilities, transport, and civil engineering. They will continue the legacy under two distinct brands: Bramley Aerospace, focusing on advanced aerospace engineering, and Bramley Harvesting, dedicated to fruit harvesting machinery.
Graham Bramley, Managing Director of Bramley Aerospace, said, “SFM is built on people, skill, and decades of experience. We saw a proud Somerset business with talented staff and great potential. Our priority is to keep work flowing for customers and give the team confidence in the future.” Emma Bramley added, “We understand specialist engineering and the responsibility to protect skilled jobs and longstanding customer relationships. We are proud to carry forward SFM’s remarkable story while keeping the business firmly rooted in Martock. Supporting local customers, suppliers, and the economy is vital to us.”
Bramley Precision Aerospace is now focused on stabilizing the business, supporting existing customers, strengthening supplier relationships, and pursuing new opportunities across aerospace and specialist engineering. Recruitment for roles including office manager, CNC operative, and design manufacturing manager is underway as the company plans to expand its Martock site.
Graham Bramley emphasized, “Customers can be assured the capabilities they depend on remain intact. Our staff’s skills are valued, and Somerset can take pride in preserving an important part of its engineering heritage. We are committed to supporting the Martock operation, building on SFM’s strengths, and creating a positive future for all connected to the business.”
