Historic Somerset Business Rescued from Closure

One of Somerset’s oldest and most treasured businesses, Overt Locke, has been saved from closure. Located on West Street in Somerton, Overt Locke has been a cornerstone of the town since 1925, offering a wide range of tools, hardware, homeware, and expert advice delivered with a trusted, personal touch.

Recently, the business faced an uncertain future, sparking concern among devoted customers who feared losing this local institution. However, Rob and Louise Gillard, well-known regional entrepreneurs behind Wentin Fasteners in Yeovil, have stepped in to preserve Overt Locke’s legacy and secure its place in the community for generations to come.

“We are incredibly proud to become part of Overt Locke’s rich history,” said Rob Gillard. “This isn’t just a shop — it’s woven into Somerton’s identity. Our commitment is to maintain its unique character while continuing to serve the needs of the community well into the future.”

While the Gillards plan to keep the store’s traditional charm and values intact, they are also exploring ways to modernize and expand its offerings. The community’s early response has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting the deep affection locals have for Overt Locke.

“There’s a strong emotional connection to Overt Locke, and we’ve felt that support since day one,” added Louise Gillard. “Our goal is to maintain the familiarity and warmth the store is known for, and we look forward to welcoming both longtime customers and new faces.”

Overt Locke remains open at its original West Street location in Somerton. The new owners warmly invite everyone to visit, say hello, and discover what lies ahead in this exciting new chapter for a beloved local business.
