The White Hart Inn, a cherished Grade II-listed pub in Bath’s Widcombe area, is set to undergo a significant restoration and transformation. After closing its doors in March 2024, the historic venue is inching closer to reopening thanks to approved plans for an extensive refurbishment.
Owned by Somerset’s Walcot Group, which acquired the pub amid a strategic expansion across the southwest, the renovation aims to preserve the inn’s rich heritage while introducing modern enhancements. The approved plans include comprehensive interior and exterior restoration, remodeling, expansion, and landscaping designed to revive the White Hart’s former glory.
Key aspects of the redevelopment involve converting an adjacent residential unit, a former gin distillery, and a retail space at 1a Prior Park Road to expand the pub’s footprint. The upgrade will create a larger pub and bar area, a separate dining room, private dining spaces, a new kitchen complete with back-of-house facilities, additional toilets, staff changing rooms, an internal bin store, and ten guest rooms for overnight stays.

Bath and North East Somerset Council officers welcomed the proposal, noting that it respects the site’s historic use while enabling an evolution that enhances both dining and accommodation offerings. Although the development entails the removal of one residential dwelling, this is integral to delivering substantial community benefits, preserving heritage elements, and providing improved visitor amenities.
A statement from the developers highlights their vision: “Our goal is to re-establish The White Hart as the heart of the Widcombe community, blending historic and contemporary elements to offer a pub, restaurant, private dining, guest accommodations, and a landscaped courtyard garden.”
With the plans approved and restoration work set to begin, the White Hart Inn is on track to once again become a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
