Historic Bath Press Site Revitalized with New Townhouses and Office Space

The historic site of the former Pitman Press Printing Works in Bath is undergoing an exciting transformation. Nestled in a location steeped in history, these newly available townhouses mark the beginning of a vibrant new chapter for this iconic landmark.

Founded in 1889 by Sir Isaac Pitman, renowned for creating the world’s most widely used shorthand system, the Pitman Press was a cornerstone of Bath’s industrial heritage. Over the years, the site housed Pitman’s Fifth Phonetic Institute, Pitman Press, and later The Bath Press, once the city’s largest employer. Despite its significant past, the 5.3-acre site has remained vacant since 2007, until independent developer City & Country acquired it in March 2024 with plans for comprehensive redevelopment.

Recognized as a Non-Designated Heritage Asset, the development carefully preserves the original 19th-century façade and its iconic chimney, blending historic charm with modern design. The first phase of the Bath Press project features 146 energy-efficient residences, including elegant three- and four-bedroom townhouses and one- to three-bedroom apartments. These homes are thoughtfully situated among landscaped gardens, internal courtyards, green spaces, roof terraces, and a playground, creating inviting communal environments. Additionally, the development includes 16,200 square feet of contemporary office space.

The townhouses now on the market reflect a harmonious fusion of the site’s industrial roots and Bath’s distinctive Georgian architectural style. Inside, residents will enjoy bright interiors, flexible layouts, and premium contemporary finishes, designed to meet modern lifestyle needs.

Situated centrally, Bath Press offers easy access to Bath’s iconic landmarks such as Bath Abbey, The Royal Crescent, and Pulteney Bridge, along with a wealth of cultural and lifestyle amenities, making it an exceptional place to live and work.

Hunter Harling, head of residential development sales for Savills Bath, highlighted the significance: “The listed Bath Press façade is a defining element of Bath’s skyline. This eagerly awaited development ushers in an exciting era for the site, poised to become one of the city’s most desirable residential addresses.”

Shelley West, Group Sales & Marketing Director at City & Country, emphasized the developer’s commitment: “Bath’s rich history and vibrant community make it a wonderful place to call home. As heritage experts, we are dedicated to creating luxurious, expertly crafted homes that honor the legacy of Bath Press, breathing new life into this treasured site.”
