After making an impressive County Championship debut, 18-year-old Thomas Rew has committed his future to Somerset by signing a new contract extending through to 2028. Having progressed through Somerset’s youth ranks from the Under-11s, Rew is now firmly established as one of the club’s most promising young talents.
Rew, younger brother of Somerset regular James Rew, burst onto the scene last season during the Vitality Blast, featuring in three games. He also shone in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, amassing 308 runs at an impressive average of 44, including a standout innings of 84 not out. His rapid rise continued with appearances for England’s Under-19s and the England Lions, highlighting his growing reputation at the national level.
“I’m very happy and proud to be signing this extension to my contract,” said Rew. “I’ve worked really hard to reach this stage, and playing for Somerset professionally after leaving school is a fantastic milestone. Opportunities have come quickly in the past year, and I’m grateful to Somerset for supporting me throughout. My approach is to focus on one match at a time and set small goals, which helps me handle the fast pace of progression.”

Rew spoke warmly about his deep connection to Somerset and Taunton: “I’ve been part of this club for years, and it feels like one big family. Playing in front of packed crowds at the County Ground is an incredible experience. Over the next three seasons, I aim to work hard, break firmly into the first team, and contribute to bringing silverware to Somerset across all formats.”
Somerset’s cricket leadership is equally enthusiastic. Head Coach Jason Kerr praised Rew’s competitive spirit and maturity: “Thomas has a natural ability to assess game situations and perform under pressure. Despite his youth, he’s already shown he can make a significant impact. We’re delighted he’s extended his stay, as securing talented young players like him is vital.”
Director of Cricket Andy Hurry echoed this sentiment, noting that Rew’s smooth transition into the senior squad and strong performances at the Under-19 World Cup and with the Lions make him a key player for Somerset’s future across formats.
