After an impressive County Championship debut, 18-year-old Thomas Rew has solidified his future with Somerset by signing a new contract that extends his stay at the County Ground through 2028.
Following in the footsteps of his older brother, James Rew, Thomas made his First XI debut in last season’s Vitality Blast and participated in two additional matches in the competition. His noteworthy performances continued in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, where he scored 308 runs over ten games, averaging 44 with a highest score of 84 not out.
“I’m very happy and proud to be signing this extension to my contract,” said Rew. “I’ve worked really hard to reach this point, and spending the next three seasons playing for Somerset after leaving school is an incredible feeling.

“In the past year, opportunities with the England Under-19s and the England Lions have come quickly, in ways I hadn’t fully anticipated. I’m grateful to Somerset for the support and chances I’ve received so far.
“My approach is to take one match at a time without getting ahead of myself. This mindset helped me last year, and I’ve spoken with many people at Somerset about managing the rapid progression in my career. Setting small, short-term goals has been invaluable, and the support from players and coaches has been fantastic.
“I’ve been with Somerset through every age group since Under 11s and have grown up in Taunton. The club feels like one big family. Watching Somerset play as a youngster and now playing in front of a packed County Ground is an amazing experience. Over the next three years, my aim is to work hard, secure a first-team spot, and help bring silverware to Taunton across all formats.”
Somerset head coach Sir Andy Hurry praised Rew’s maturity and talent: “Thomas is a player of high potential who we expect to play a key role across all formats for the club. His seamless transition into the First XI last summer and valuable contributions have impressed us all.
“He also shone at the Under-19 World Cup and with the Lions during the off-season. We are thrilled to support his ongoing development and excited about his future.”
Director of Cricket Mark Kerr added, “Thomas has an innate competitiveness and game awareness beyond his years. His maturity combined with natural talent has already made a significant impact within the Lions and Somerset environments. Securing his contract extension is crucial to nurturing such prodigious talent, and we are excited to watch his growth as we remain patient and supportive of his progression.”
