Lauren Short, founder of the wellness brand Ples’Jour, has raised an urgent warning about the widespread use of cyclopentasiloxane—often referred to as D5—in everyday cosmetic and personal care products. Despite its common presence, many consumers remain unaware of the potential risks associated with this ‘hidden’ ingredient.
Cyclopentasiloxane is a silicone-based compound prized for its silky texture, quick evaporation, and smooth application. It is frequently found in products ranging from lubricants and antifrizz treatments to sunscreens, deodorants, shampoos, conditioners, makeup, and night creams. However, recent independent tests on 46 lubricant products revealed that 71% contained harmful or toxic chemicals, highlighting growing safety concerns.
Many consumers assume that products sold in mainstream stores have been rigorously tested and are completely safe. Lauren Short warns this assumption overlooks a significant ‘regulatory blindspot,’ especially given how many products are applied to highly absorbent and sensitive areas of the body.

Scientific studies have linked cyclopentasiloxane to endocrine disruption, environmental bioaccumulation, and potential fertility issues. Due to these concerns, some regions, particularly within the European Union, have begun restricting its use in cosmetics and skincare.
“There’s a huge knowledge gap regarding lubricants,” Lauren explains. “I used harmful lubricants for years without realizing it until I started developing my own brand. I want to help other women avoid the same mistake.”
In response to regulatory pressure and consumer concerns, manufacturers are exploring safer alternatives. Botanical oils and waxes offer natural options but may feel heavier and penetrate the skin differently, which could pose problems for sensitive skin. Meanwhile, water-soluble silicones—plant-based and vegan-friendly—are emerging as promising substitutes without the drawbacks of traditional silicones like cyclopentasiloxane.
Consumers should remain vigilant by reading ingredient labels carefully and staying informed about emerging ingredient safety updates to protect their health and wellbeing.
