Eric Norman, a 74-year-old pub landlord from Wheddon Cross, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his remarkable efforts following the tragic coach crash near Minehead in July 2025.
The incident involved a coach carrying up to 70 pupils and staff from Minehead Middle School returning from a trip to Exmoor Zoo. The vehicle slipped down a 20-foot slope, resulting in the heartbreaking death of 10-year-old Oliver Price and injuries to several others who were taken to hospital.
On that day, Mr Norman opened the doors of his pub to survivors, offering vital support and a place of refuge. Reflecting on the award, he said, “I like to think this medal is for the entire community who within half an hour rallied round on that dreadful day and tried to give help where we could. There were many people involved.”

Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq, presented Mr Norman with his medal at a garden party near Frome. He praised Mr Norman’s ‘‘exemplary’’ actions, emphasising how his swift response eased pressures on emergency services and provided crucial support during the crisis.
The British Empire Medal is granted on behalf of the King to acknowledge hands-on local community contributions, long-term charitable work, or innovative local volunteering.
Mr Norman’s citation highlighted his “instinctive generosity and unwavering support for those children and their families in crisis,” noting that his leadership symbolised how a community can unite effectively during emergencies.
Following the crash, Oliver Price’s parents, Lucy and Matthew, expressed their deep gratitude to everyone who assisted. They commended the emergency responders and extended special thanks to the team at the Rest and Be Thankful pub in Wheddon Cross for their immediate hospitality and care, which provided a valuable meeting place for parents.
Earlier this year, police submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service for consideration of potential charges related to the crash.
Eric Norman’s recognition serves as a testament to the power of community spirit and selflessness in the face of tragedy.
