The West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA), a charity dedicated to preserving and supporting the heritage railway between Taunton and Minehead, has been hit by a disturbing series of thefts. In under two weeks, thieves have targeted the charity three times, stealing vital equipment including electric cables, generators, and other essential items.
The charity’s chairman, Edward Martin, expressed deep disappointment at the raids, emphasizing the impact on the organisation’s operations. “It’s incredibly disheartening that anyone would steal from a charity like ours,” he said. “Funds are already scarce, and now we face the challenge of raising extra money to replace the stolen equipment. These tools are crucial to staging popular events, such as the rally, which attracts thousands each year.”
The damage comes at a critical time for WSRA, as it continues efforts to restore steam locomotives and railway carriages that are key to maintaining the charm and heritage of the West Somerset Railway. “This theft is a major setback for us,” Martin added.

The charity supports the daily operation of the railway, holds ownership of historic carriages and locomotives, and promotes educational initiatives related to railway heritage. Unfortunately, the rural locations of their sites make security a constant challenge. “It’s a sad reality that our remote sites are vulnerable, and it’s devastating to see a charity targeted in this way,” Martin said.
An appeal has been launched for public support, encouraging donations on the WSRA’s website to help recover and continue their important work.
Authorities are investigating the crimes and anyone with information is urged to contact Avon & Somerset Police, referencing crime number 5226164953, or reach out confidentially to the WSRA at 01823 433856 or via email at [email protected].
