Heritage Railway Charity Devastated by Multiple Thefts

The West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA), a charity dedicated to supporting the heritage railway running between Taunton and Minehead, has faced a troubling spate of thefts in under two weeks. Thieves have stolen essential materials including electric cables, generators, and other critical equipment, severely impacting the organisation’s operations.

Edward Martin, chairman of WSRA, expressed deep disappointment at the repeated crimes. “It’s incredibly disheartening that anyone would target a charity like ours,” he said. “Charities and heritage organisations already operate under tight financial constraints, and now we must find extra funds to replace vital equipment necessary for hosting popular events like the annual rally — events that attract thousands of visitors.”

The stolen items are crucial not only for day-to-day operations but also for the ongoing restoration of the railway’s steam locomotives and carriage fleet. Martin called the thefts “a major setback” at a critical time for the charity.

The WSRA has launched a fundraising appeal, inviting supporters to contribute via their website to help recover losses and continue preserving the railway’s heritage. Martin emphasised that the stolen equipment holds little value to the thieves but is indispensable to the charity’s mission.

Operating in remote rural areas makes securing the railway’s assets particularly challenging. Martin added, “It’s incredibly disappointing when those who benefit from and appreciate heritage railways target the very organisations working to preserve them.”

Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to contact Avon & Somerset police, quoting crime reference number 5226164953, or confidentially reach out to WSRA directly at 01823 433856 or via [email protected].
