Henry Arundell Shines on Bath Rugby Debut as Johann van Graan Praises New Signings

Henry Arundell made an electrifying impact on his Bath Rugby debut, crossing the try line twice in a commanding 47-14 victory over Glasgow Warriors during Saturday’s pre-season friendly at the Recreation Ground.

Bath head coach Johann van Graan strategically fielded a second-string development side in the first half, before introducing his experienced stars after the break. This approach kept Bath ahead at halftime, 14-7, and allowed them to pull away decisively with their marquee players on the field.

New signing Bernard van der Linde impressed as scrum-half, showcasing his ability to exploit gaps with sharp running, while fellow recruit Chris Harris made a formidable defensive contribution, earning several turnovers. These additions promise to strengthen what is already England’s premier squad.

Reflecting on the newcomers, van Graan commented, “Chris Harris has been everything I expected and more. His defense was outstanding today, and he also showed physciality and skill in attack. He’s a great player and person, fitting in perfectly with the team. Bernard has real talent. Not many may know him yet, but Bath fans will be excited by his performance. Our focus remains on squad development and building competition.”

Bath’s first-half tries were scored by lock Harvey Cuckson—despite a controversial knock-on call—and flanker Thompson Cowan. Glasgow threatened with organized play but only managed a penalty try following a yellow card to Bath lock Will Jeanes.

At halftime, van Graan introduced six fresh forwards, including Tom Dunn, Ross Molony, Quinn Roux, birthday boy Miles Reid, Ethan Staddon, and Francois van Wyk, shifting momentum firmly in Bath’s favor. In the backs, Arundell, Tom de Glanville, and Joe Cokanasiga added spark.

With the full squad on the field, Bath surged ahead. Arundell scored his first try from a slick move set up by de Glanville, and then showcased his versatility by finishing a rare try from the back of a maul. Later, Arundell set up Will Butt for a stunning 30-meter touchdown after a brilliant offload.

Van Graan praised Arundell’s pace and instinct: “We signed him for his speed. His first try was excellent, and scoring from a maul is not typical for wingers. It’s a fantastic start for him.”

Glasgow faced another blow when winger Cameron van Wyk received a yellow card, but managed a spectacular 60-meter solo try through Brent Jackson. Bath responded swiftly as replacement locks Roux and Molony powered through, setting up Tom Carr-Smith’s corner try from the blindside, despite Carr-Smith playing out of position on the wing.

Bath now prepare for a mini-camp in Ireland ahead of their match against Munster on Friday night.
