Heavy Rainfall to Drench Somerset and Other UK Regions Next Week

After a week marked by multiple weather warnings across the southwest, the UK is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall set to begin Saturday, September 13. According to the GFS weather model, the downpours will sweep across approximately 600 miles, impacting regions nationwide.

The Met Office forecasts particularly wet conditions for western England, which could see some of the heaviest rain in the country. This is driven by persistent low pressure systems expected to dominate the second week of September, bringing showers, prolonged rain, and potential thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds.

In its extended forecast covering September 9 to 18, the Met Office noted: “Much of this period will be unsettled, with low pressure likely to dominate the overall pattern. Showers or longer spells of rain will affect much of the UK at times.” Heavy rain and showers will be most frequent in the west and north, with thunderstorms and hail also possible. Additionally, some spells of strong winds may accompany deep low-pressure systems.

Towards the end of this period, there may be intermittent drier and sunnier spells in southern parts of the UK as high pressure attempts to build. Temperatures are expected to hover around average or slightly below, occasionally rising during drier intervals.

BBC Weather’s forecast for September 8 to 14 agrees, indicating continued unsettled conditions through the first half of the week with further rain and showers driven by advancing low-pressure and frontal systems. Isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy rain remain likely. Temperatures are expected to hold just above September averages without significant cooling.

Windy conditions may occur as rain systems pass, though a calmer and drier stretch could develop midweek due to transient high-pressure ridges. However, further rain or showers are anticipated by week’s end, particularly affecting northern and western areas more than southern and eastern regions. Overall, temperatures should remain close to or slightly above seasonal norms.

Besides Somerset, significant rainfall is also predicted for urban centers including London, Kent, Essex, Southampton, Birmingham, Manchester, and Newcastle. Weather charts suggest hourly precipitation rates of three to five millimeters could occur in locations such as London, Southampton, Peterborough, Norfolk, and Lincolnshire.

With unsettled and wet weather expected to persist across much of the UK, residents should prepare for periods of intense rain, potential storms, and gusty winds over the coming week.
