Heatwave Prompts Early-Morning Bin Collections Across Somerset

Somerset Council has announced that, starting May 26, bin collections throughout the county will begin as early as 6am. This adjustment comes in response to an anticipated heatwave with temperatures soaring above 30°C.

The council explained that these earlier starts are necessary to protect waste collection crews from the intense heat during peak daytime hours. “Waste collection is physically demanding work,” the council noted, “and starting early helps limit exposure to the hottest part of the day.”

Residents are urged to place their bins out the night before to ensure they are collected promptly during these new early-morning schedules.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, the lead member for communities, environment, and climate change, emphasized the importance of adapting to the weather shift: “After the recent cooler weeks, we’re expecting a sharp increase in temperature. To safeguard our crews and maintain smooth service, early starts are essential during this upcoming heatwave.”
