Heartfelt Tribute to Beloved Son Craig Hurcombe Following Tragic Death in Somerset

The family of Craig Hurcombe, 39, from Rowde, have shared a deeply moving tribute after his remains were discovered in the village of Gurney Slade, Somerset, last month.

Craig was reported missing to Wiltshire Police on January 10, and his remains were found in the Roemead Road area on January 14. Avon and Somerset Police later confirmed the identification.

Described lovingly by his family as the “perfect son,” Craig’s parents, Nicola and Paul, expressed their heartache, saying, “Craig was the perfect son and an independent man. We are living with unimaginable loss and a huge hole in our lives which we will never come to terms with.”

Craig’s family includes his two sisters, Laura and Jessica, and his brother Ashley, all mourning the loss of a brother taken far too soon. He also leaves behind eight nieces and nephews—Skye, Maddie, Riley, Tillie-Mae, Archie, Harvey, Oakley, and Brodie—who miss their uncle deeply. Skye, the eldest niece, lost not only an uncle but a best friend with whom she shared many special outings like dining out and attending Bath Rugby matches.

Craig was known for his hardworking nature, ambition, and kindness, highly respected by his colleagues and especially by his boss, who acknowledged his valuable contributions to the company.

A passionate sportsman from a young age, Craig played rugby with dedication. He began playing at age eleven for Sheldon School, Chippenham Rugby Club, and Wiltshire and Dorset until he turned 18. Later, he joined Devizes Rugby Club, where he eventually became vice-president. Known affectionately as ‘Hurcs,’ he earned hundreds of caps over the years. The rugby community has expressed profound sorrow and shared cherished memories, including a memorable trip to watch the Lions rugby tour in Australia scheduled for 2025.

Craig’s impact extended beyond his family and friends; numerous rugby clubs near and far have paid tribute, underscoring how deeply he was loved. His tragic and “meaningless” death has left a lasting impression on many, young and old alike.

In connection with Craig’s death, Michael Bretton, 40, from Armoury Road, Shaftesbury, Dorset, has been charged with murder and one count of stalking involving fear of violence against a woman. He is due to appear at Bristol Crown Court on Monday, July 13.
