‘Heartbreak’ in Somerset Village as Popular Festival Forced to Cancel Second Day

The community of Pitney in Somerset faces disappointment as the cherished annual Pitfest festival is cut short due to a last-minute paperwork issue. While festivities will proceed today, Friday, July 3, the entire second day—Saturday, July 4—is now cancelled.

The trouble arose from an incomplete temporary event notice submitted by the organisers. They described Pitfest merely as a ‘live music event’ and only indicated selling alcohol under the licensing section, neglecting to mention other licensable activities such as food and music. This error meant the event lacked proper authorization for Saturday’s main attractions.

Somerset Council expressed their regret but explained that allowing the festival to continue as planned would be illegal and uninsured. The council clarified that licensing laws require specific permits for all regulated entertainment and late-night refreshments. With insufficient time to issue corrections or obtain necessary approvals, cancellation was the only legal option.

In an emotional statement released Wednesday night, the organisers conveyed their heartbreak and apologized for the disruption. They assured the community that Friday’s events remain unaffected and vowed to return stronger next year. Pitney residents, with a population under 500, have traditionally embraced the 15-year-old festival featuring local artists, food vendors, and family-friendly fun.

Andy Doyle, speaking for Somerset Council, emphasized their sympathy while underscoring the strict regulatory environment. “We have no legal power to waive requirements or authorize activities not covered by the temporary event notice,” he said. The council had attempted to guide organisers on non-regulated entertainment options to salvage some elements of the festival, but ultimately Pitfest organizers chose to cancel Saturday’s events.

Local band We Are - Not Like The Others, scheduled to headline Saturday night, expressed solidarity via social media, promising to support Pitfest’s comeback.

Tonight, attendees can still enjoy a ticketed cabaret special in a marquee, featuring live entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere, as originally planned for Friday.
