Haynes Motor Museum Shifts into the Future with New Sustainable Motoring Exhibition

Haynes Motor Museum is inviting visitors to explore the future of transportation with its new exhibition, Transitions, launching on Friday, October 24. This immersive display highlights the rapid advancements in sustainable motoring, showcasing the materials, technologies, and fuels shaping the next generation of vehicles.

Transitions offers a hands-on experience featuring written displays, video presentations, and interactive elements designed to engage visitors of all ages. The exhibition covers a broad spectrum of innovations, from hydrogen power and solar energy to autonomous vehicle design and synthetic fuels.

Among the standout exhibits are pioneering vehicles like the 2019 Microlino Concept Car, the 2001 BMW C1 200 scooter, and a 2016 Autonomous Range Rover Sport. Also featured is a unique electric wooden car that can be recharged using solar panels, illustrating the creative approaches to eco-friendly driving.

The exhibition also spotlights the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai and the Honda Insight, one of the earliest hybrid cars inspired by the J-VX concept, tracing the evolution of environmentally conscious engineering. Visitors can delve into synthetic fuels, which represent a promising path toward reducing carbon emissions while still using combustion engines.

Alongside celebrating innovation, Transitions addresses the challenges still faced by alternative fuel vehicles, such as the environmental footprint of battery production and the complexities involved in achieving fully autonomous driving.

Mattie Geary, collections and exhibitions assistant at Haynes Motor Museum, says, “The Transitions exhibition is an exciting milestone for the museum as we explore what the future of motoring might look like and how we might get there. Through a blend of informative displays and interactive experiences, we invite visitors to engage thoughtfully with the road ahead.”

Timed to coincide with the October half-term holiday, the exhibition enhances the museum’s family-friendly appeal. Children can enjoy themed trails and a Somerset-inspired Scalextric track, while enthusiasts have the opportunity to attend weekly talks covering the Mini and vehicles from around the world.

Haynes Motor Museum, located in Sparkford near Yeovil, Somerset (BA22 7LH), is open daily from 10 am. For more information, visit www.haynesmotormuseum.org or call 01963 440804.
