‘Haunted’ Somerset Castle and Former School Hits the Market

Beckington Castle, a captivating 400-year-old property near Frome in Somerset, is currently up for sale with an asking price of £995,000. This Grade II listed estate has played many roles over the centuries — from a nobleman’s residence to a hotel, a school, and most recently, office space.

The castle’s spooky reputation adds to its unique charm. During its time as Ravenscroft School from 1945 to 1970, there were reports of a dark shadow apparition walking through walls, according to former students. Interestingly, an early 20th-century real estate advertisement even marketed the castle’s haunted allure as a selling point. Despite the eerie stories, supernatural tourism site Haunted Hosts rates Beckington Castle’s haunt threat as ‘harmless,’ suggesting a ghostly presence more like Casper than a specter to fear.

Estate agents Cooper and Tanner highlight Beckington Castle’s historical and architectural significance: “This striking 17th-century house has been home to several notable residents and has served as a hotel, antiques showroom, and school. The current owners refurbished it in the 1990s to function as their office headquarters.”

The property spans four floors—five when including the cellar—encompassing 18,295 square feet of space. Its interior features distinctive rooms such as the merchants’ room, long room, reception room, and intriguingly, a room designated as a ‘maternity ward’ on the floor plans.

Though the property is currently listed as commercial office space, potential buyers could renovate it back into a private residence. The castle’s name evolved over time, initially known as ‘Castle House’ by its early owners before becoming simply ‘The Castle’ and eventually ‘Beckington Castle.’

Located in the welcoming village of Beckington, just a few miles north of Frome, the new owner will enjoy a community steeped in history—with local amenities including two schools, a pub, deli, and a nearby Starbucks.

Cooper and Tanner continue to welcome inquiries from interested buyers.
