Hammer Attack Victim Released as Police Hunt Masked Cyclist Suspect

A man who was assaulted with a hammer during an altercation involving two masked men on bicycles in Melksham has been discharged from hospital, police confirmed.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Friday, October 17, on Melksham High Street. The victim confronted two males dressed in black and riding bicycles when one of them struck him with a hammer.

Emergency services responded at approximately 12:04 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, and the injured man was taken to hospital. Fortunately, his injuries are not life-threatening, and he is now recovering safely at home.

Detective Chief Inspector Penny Andrews addressed the community’s concerns, saying: “We understand the alarm this incident and the significant police presence have caused. We believe this attack was an isolated act with no ongoing threat to the public.”

She added, “We thank the witnesses who have already come forward. Our investigation is ongoing, and we urge anyone with information, particularly those who may have dashcam footage or saw two males in dark clothing cycling around the town centre shortly before the attack, to contact us.”

Authorities are actively seeking information to identify and apprehend the suspect. Anyone with relevant details is asked to call police on 101, referencing crime number 54250138927.
