Gritting Lorry Destroyed by Fire Near Glastonbury School

A gritting lorry was severely damaged by fire this morning on Edgarley Road, close to Millfield Preparatory School in Glastonbury. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were alerted at 8:15 am and quickly dispatched two fire engines and a water carrier to the scene.

Upon arrival, crews found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the driver had already escaped unharmed. Firefighters worked diligently using breathing apparatus and water jets to extinguish the blaze and protect the nearby school building.

The council-owned gritting lorry sustained approximately 90% damage in the fire. Police enforced a road closure on Edgarley Road and the adjacent A361, resulting in slow traffic and disruptions throughout the day. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes as emergency repair work continued late into the evening.
