Greg Cackett: Social Media Star and Speed Powerhouse Leading GB Bobsleigh Charge

Greg Cackett stands out not only for his remarkable athleticism but also as a social media sensation, sharing the thrills and challenges of bobsleigh with fans worldwide. Based at the University of Bath, this Surrey-born powerhouse is now heading to his third Winter Olympics, cementing his status as the most decorated British brakeman in history.

Known to teammates as “Big Daddy,” Cackett combines explosive sprinting speed and refined technique to dominate the start phase—a critical component in bobsleigh racing. Trained under Olympic sprint legend Linford Christie, he clocked an impressive 10.24 seconds in the 100m, a speed that translates directly into lightning-fast sled pushes that can decide races in the first 50 meters.

Since establishing himself at the Sports Training Village in Bath in 2016, Cackett has amassed 17 World Cup medals, breaking records that had stood for over 80 years. His leadership is pivotal for Brad Hall’s elite four-man crew, where he serves as the veteran anchor holding the team’s chemistry and drive together.

Beyond the ice track, Cackett uniquely connects with fans through ‘The Brakeman,’ an online platform he created to reveal the “dark arts” of bobsleigh—from 5 AM gym sessions and intense training drills to the high-adrenaline crashes and camaraderie behind the scenes. His storytelling brings the sport’s intensity and human spirit to life, inspiring upcoming athletes and followers alike.

Cackett’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. After overcoming a serious injury in 2024 that threatened his Olympic ambitions, he returned stronger to secure World Cup podium finishes. His brief exploration of track cycling following the 2018 PyeongChang Games only reinforced his determination to complete his mission on the ice.

He also invests in the future of British athletics, running “Power Speed Performance” camps with teammate Taylor Lawrence at Millfield School in Somerset, where they teach young athletes to harness the explosive power that propels a 400kg bobsleigh down the mountain.

With unshakable resilience, raw speed, and an unrelenting winning mindset, Greg Cackett is not just chasing medals but creating a legacy for British bobsleigh on and off the ice.
