The Green Party is poised for a significant leftward shift following the decisive election of Zack Polanski as its new leader. Polanski, a member of the London Assembly, secured a commanding victory in the party’s leadership contest, promising a renewed focus on “eco-populism” that aims to resonate deeply with voters feeling politically disenfranchised.
In his victory speech, Polanski delivered a clear and uncompromising message to the ruling government: “We are here to replace you.” His challenge extends beyond political rhetoric, emphasizing an intent to confront power structures and wealth inequalities entrenched in the UK.
Polanski criticized Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, accusing it of exploiting voter disillusionment while being backed by billionaires undermining democratic institutions and environmental protections. “If you’re feeling hopeless, in despair, or politically homeless, there is a political home for you with the Greens,” he declared, signaling an inclusive invitation for those dissatisfied with current options.

Highlighting issues such as insecure employment, environmental degradation, and the failures of the traditional two-party system, Polanski positioned the Greens as the authentic alternative, committed to holding both Labour and the Conservatives accountable. His leadership also hints at potential alliances on the left, notably showing openness to working with Jeremy Corbyn’s new political venture to present a united front against Sir Keir Starmer’s administration.
Polanski decisively defeated the joint ticket of Green MPs Ellie Chowns and Adrian Ramsay, winning 20,411 votes to their combined 3,705. Despite this overwhelming mandate, the turnout represented less than a third of the party’s membership, which currently numbers approximately 68,500, according to Green Party CEO Harriet Lamb.
Both Ramsay and Chowns have congratulated Polanski and expressed their commitment to working alongside him and the deputy leaders, Rachel Millward and Mothin Ali, to continue advancing the Green Party’s mission. Their statement reaffirmed a shared goal: to hold the current government to account and push forward policies for a fairer, greener, and more sustainable future.
Under Zack Polanski’s leadership, the Green Party is clearly setting the stage for a more assertive, left-leaning approach that seeks to challenge established political norms and offer a compelling alternative to voters eager for change.
