A routine eye appointment turned into a life-changing moment for Carol Hampton, a grandmother from Somerset. After postponing her eye test multiple times, she finally went and was stunned when her optician found a cancerous tumor behind her eye.
Shortly after this discovery, Carol was diagnosed with Occular melanoma, a rare cancer that affects around 851 individuals in the UK annually. Determined to raise awareness, she is spearheading a Shine night walk in Bristol, an illuminating walking event to support Cancer Research UK.
Encouraging others to join the 10k walk through Bristol harbourside and city centre on Friday, September 13, Carol emphasized the importance of not delaying routine medical check-ups. She shared her gratitude towards the medical professionals who have been overseeing her treatment and emphasized the significance of staying positive and motivated while dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Despite the challenges, Carol remains optimistic and has found support in a new walk and running group, emphasizing the importance of physical and mental well-being. She aims to inspire others by advocating for proactive healthcare and taking action in the face of adversity.
Having recently learned that the tumor has shrunk by half, Carol continues to undergo regular scans to monitor her condition. Her inspiring journey serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection and the resilience in the face of adversity.
Alison Birkett from Cancer Research UK highlighted the inclusivity of the 10k walk, emphasizing that it’s not about the finish line but about uniting to raise funds and support cancer research.

The event, commencing at the Bristol Harbourside by Lloyds Amphitheatre at 8 pm, offers participants an illuminating parade through Bristol, passing iconic landmarks and shining a light on the collective fight against cancer.
