The shuttered storefront of Chapter 22, a former Bath shop known for selling records and plants, has been vandalized with offensive graffiti including the phrase “F*** Bath.” The defacement also includes derogatory messages targeting the local council, such as “council ****.”
Chapter 22 closed its doors in October 2025 after four years of operation. The owners expressed heartbreak over the closure, emphasizing the love and hard work invested in the business. In their closing statement, they criticized the council for what they described as a “disgraceful” lack of support, warning other independent businesses in Bath about the difficulties faced amid rising costs and a challenging retail environment.
Responding to the closure, Bath & North East Somerset Council cabinet member for resources, Mark Elliott, stated that enforcement actions were a last resort after extensive discussions and that the council must ensure all debts owed are collected.

The graffiti has left residents stunned. One local commented online, calling the vandalism a “mystery for the ages” and speculating on the true reasons behind the shop’s failure.
When approached for comment about the graffiti, Councillor Elliott condemned the offensive markings and confirmed they have been removed. He reiterated the council’s commitment to supporting businesses in the area and highlighted the opening of new ventures as evidence of confidence in Bath’s economy despite tough times.
