Graffiti-Covered Wall Transformed into Vibrant Riverside Mural in Bath

A once graffiti-covered wall along the River Avon path in Bath has been beautifully transformed by a group of young artists into a bright, vibrant mural that breathes new life into the riverside walkway.

This mural forms part of a broader initiative to enhance the 10km Bath River Line, stretching from Newbridge to Bathampton. The project aims to better link the river path to surrounding green spaces, making the area more accessible and welcoming for both residents and visitors. The initiative is a partnership between Bath & North East Somerset Council and Little Lost Robot, an independent non-profit art collective focused on social practice in the region.

Located on the back of the Army Reserve Centre building, the mural was designed during two creative workshops involving NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) young artists. Four young painters then brought the design to life during several sessions earlier this month. The artwork highlights the unique wildlife along the river and embodies the council’s vision to connect the community with its natural environment.

Ruby Sant, Director of Little Lost Robot and Head of the Inclusive Communities team at Bath Spa, praised the project: “Collaborating with young artists Jak and Rose, along with our creative team, has been a joy. This mural is a fantastic opportunity for emerging artists to receive paid work, showcase their talents publicly, and kickstart their careers in the arts."

Councillor Paul May, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, added, “I want to thank everyone who contributed to this beautiful mural and Little Lost Robot for managing the design and installation. It showcases the creative talent within our community and brightens a popular stretch of the riverside path. I encourage residents and visitors to explore the Bath River Line and enjoy this stunning tribute to our local natural environment.”

Work has recently commenced on Phase One of the Bath River Line project, focusing on improvements between Windsor Bridge and Green Park. Planned enhancements include new seating, better access to the river path, ecological planting, and new wayfinding signage. Efforts are also underway to create a river viewing area and enhance the entrance from Green Park to the riverside path.

Councillor Sarah Warren, Cabinet Member for Sustainable B&NES, emphasized the project’s environmental benefits: “The Bath River Line aligns with the council’s Nature Positive 2030 vision by restoring natural habitats along the river to boost biodiversity and climate resilience. It also creates inclusive social spaces for everyone to enjoy. This three-phase project will expand Bath’s active travel network by providing a smooth, accessible riverside route from Newbridge to Batheaston.”

Work along the Bath River Line will continue into August and beyond in multiple phases. Temporary, necessary closures of towpath sections will be clearly signposted with diversions provided for path users to ensure minimal disruption.
