Bank holiday traffic on the M5 came to a standstill as both sides of the motorway were closed, all thanks to a runaway goat dashing down the carriageway.
Motorists were left in disbelief as the brown goat was spotted darting across lanes between Taunton and Weston-super-Mare in Somerset on May 4, 2025.
Several bystanders took it upon themselves to guide the animal off the motorway in an effort to keep it safe.

Derya Kirdag, 30, and her partner Bradley Biden, 28, who works in finance, were on their way to a campsite near Alton Towers when they encountered the chaos caused by the goat. Derya managed to capture the incident on her phone before being instructed to return to her vehicle by police.
Describing the unusual scene, Derya, an engineer from Exeter, Devon, said, “Normally if there’s traffic, people would be annoyed, but everyone seemed quite happy.”
After a delay of around 30 minutes, the couple were able to resume their journey as the traffic dispersed.
A National Highways spokesperson reassured the public, stating, “The goat left the carriageway unharmed through the adjoining verge, and the motorway was reopened to traffic just before 12.10pm.”
They also emphasized the importance of safety when dealing with such incidents, advising individuals to contact the relevant authorities in case of loose animals on the road network.
