Somerset’s local government and community are mourning the loss of John Coles, a respected and longstanding councillor in Glastonbury. Known for his warmth, dedication, and deep connection to his community, Mr. Coles passed away on July 8.
Mr. Coles served Glastonbury with distinction for over a decade on Mendip District Council and for many years on Glastonbury Town Council. At a full meeting of Somerset Council on July 15 in Bridgwater, members observed a minute of silence in his memory and shared heartfelt tributes celebrating his life and service.
Lee Baker, Deputy Chairman of Somerset Council, praised Coles as “a dedicated public servant whose unwavering commitment to Glastonbury and its people spanned many years.” He added, “John brought vast experience, determination, and an intimate understanding of local issues to every council he served on.”

Representing the Glastonbury St. John’s ward as a Conservative from 2007 to 2019, Mr. Coles also held the position of vice-chairman of Mendip District Council in 2015/16. His extensive contributions were widely recognized across party lines.
Councillor Liz Leyshon recalled John’s encyclopedic knowledge of Glastonbury and his passion for the Somerset and Dorset Steam Railway. “If you had three hours to spare, he would happily share every detail,” she said. “John absolutely loved his hometown and represented it with pride.”
Conservative Councillor Philip Ham highlighted Coles’s personal qualities: “A friendly, polite, and humorous gentleman who was beloved by the community. John was always a reliable councillor, respected beyond politics for his listening skills and thoughtful contributions. He treated colleagues and officers with respect and kindness.”
John Coles also served twice as Mayor of Glastonbury, in 2006 and 2010. Glastonbury Town Council’s official statement lauded him as a pillar of the community, noting his readiness to serve on any committee, his integrity, courteous demeanor, and collaborative spirit.
“John’s dedication and kindness left a lasting legacy,” the council expressed. “He will be remembered with great affection by colleagues, friends, and residents alike. Our deepest condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.”
Mr. Coles’ funeral will take place on Friday, July 31, at 10:30 am at St John the Baptist Church, Glastonbury. Attendees are asked to wear yellow as a tribute. Following the service, a private burial will be held, with a family and close friends-only wake.
In honor of his memory, the flag atop Glastonbury Town Hall will be flown at half-mast until after the funeral.
