Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show: A Spectacular Celebration of Medieval Thrills and Rural Life

The eagerly awaited Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show returns to Dorset on 13th and 14th August, bringing an exciting blend of historic spectacle, thrilling performances, and authentic rural charm.

Taking centre stage in the main arena this year are The Knights of Albion, making their Dorset debut with an electrifying medieval jousting show. This stunning theatrical display transports audiences back to an age of bravery and honour, featuring professional stunt riders and trick-trained horses in action-packed battles between valiant heroes and dastardly villains. With movie-quality armour, colourful costumes, and captivating storylines, it’s an immersive experience not to be missed. Support your favourite — will you back Sir Marc the Brave from Gillingham or Sir Rebekka the Wise from Shaftesbury? And beware the dastardly Sir John the Vile from Trowbridge!

Adding a modern edge to the show, the Tigers Motorcycle Display Team will dazzle with gravity-defying stunts and high-speed manoeuvres. Comprised of riders aged five to sixteen, this young, daring group will leap through fire, execute tight chicanes, and perform jaw-dropping tricks that bring a dose of adrenaline to the traditional country event.

Show organiser Cat Harris shares her excitement: “We’re proud to feature two spectacular headline acts this year. From thrilling medieval clashes to cutting-edge motorcycle stunts, there truly is something for everyone.”

Beyond the main arena, visitors can enjoy a full programme of countryside attractions. Livestock parades and equestrian events invite spectators to embrace rural life, including Shetland pony racing on 14th August and close encounters with majestic heavy horses. Visitors can learn about these gentle giants through plaiting and harnessing demonstrations.

One of the show’s unique highlights returns this year: the entertaining and educational Sheep Show. This lively presentation features nine different sheep breeds, each with its own story and theme tune, including Nobby the Norfolk, the star of the show. With live shearing demonstrations and a finale performance called the ‘Sheep Show Shuffle,’ this act promises smiles and surprises for the whole family.

Cat Harris adds, “The Sheep Show perfectly blends fun and learning to deepen everyone’s appreciation of wool production and these incredible animals. It’s a ten out of ten for me!”

Families will also enjoy the Fun, Food and Farming tent, packed with interactive exhibits about rural life and food production. Vintage machinery, steam engines, classic cars, arts and crafts, live music, and a funfair round out the celebration of countryside heritage and entertainment.

Tickets are now on sale with flexible one- and two-day passes, and children under five attend free, making it an ideal family outing. Visit www.gillinghamandshaftesburyshow.co.uk to secure your place today.
