George Russell clinched a hard-fought victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, surging ahead to claim his first Formula 1 win in three months. Starting from pole position, Russell quickly established a commanding lead, although he faced intense pressure during two safety-car restarts. Max Verstappen, starting eighth, impressively charged through the field to finish just behind Russell, applying relentless pressure on the final straight but falling short by less than two-tenths of a second.
A dramatic final-lap crash involving Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas temporarily slowed both Russell and Verstappen, allowing the Dutchman to close the gap aggressively as the race concluded. Verstappen, still seeking his first win of the year-a rare drought since his 2016 rookie season-remarked on the near miss. Meanwhile, Russell expressed relief, noting a loss of power boost near the finish that nearly cost him the lead.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar returned from injury to secure a respectable third place, capitalising on the challenges faced by other frontrunners.

However, it was a disappointing day for McLaren. Defending champion Lando Norris was taken out in a crash initiated by Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, who collided with his teammate Pierre Gasly, sparking a multi-car incident. Oscar Piastri, defending third place, locked up his wheels and went off track amid pressure from Hadjar, dropping down to 14th.
Meanwhile, championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who started 16th due to a qualifying crash, managed to finish fifth. He adeptly avoided multiple incidents, including the three-car collision that took Norris out, and overtook Lewis Hamilton, limiting the damage to his lead in the standings.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix proved to be a race of attrition and skill, with Russell’s composure under pressure contrasting sharply with McLaren’s unfortunate setbacks.
