Generations Come Together as Bath’s Moorlands School Celebrates 75 Years

Moorlands Schools Federation in Bath marked a significant milestone by celebrating its 75th anniversary with a heartfelt series of events that brought together local dignitaries, alumni, former staff, and current students.

The federation, which encompasses both the infant and junior schools, commemorated the occasion with assemblies, a special gathering of 75 invited guests, and a lively whole-school street party on Friday, June 13.

Founded in 1950 on the historic site of author Anna Sewell’s former home, Moorlands has been a cornerstone of education for generations of Bath children. The year of its opening was notable for cultural landmarks such as the release of C.S. Lewis’s beloved book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, continued sweet rationing, and the rarity of television ownership — with only 350,000 homes in the UK equipped with a TV at that time.

A highlight of the celebrations took place on Wednesday, June 11, when the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Professor Bharat Pankhania, made his first official appearance in office at the school’s anniversary event.

The day also saw a warm reunion as former pupils, teachers, and headteachers returned to reminisce. Among them was Professor Gwythian Prins, who joined Moorlands in 1954 and fondly recalled Edith Wilkinson, the school’s inaugural headteacher.

Former headteachers Bridget Collett, who led the school over 25 years ago, and Susan Warby, an alumna who later served as headteacher, were also present to celebrate the school’s enduring legacy.

Executive headteacher Louisa Sellars expressed her pride: “Celebrating 75 years of inspiring learning, friendship, and community has been a true joy. Our journey, from 1950 to today, has been shaped by generations of pupils, committed teachers, and supportive families. Honouring our past encourages us as we look forward to an even brighter future.”

Moorlands is part of The Partnership Trust, a multi-academy trust based in Radstock that supports 18 schools across the region.

Emily Massey, Chief Executive of The Partnership Trust, added, “Congratulations to Moorlands on this remarkable 75th anniversary. The celebrations planned by the school’s staff and students were exceptional. Meeting so many former pupils and teachers truly highlighted the lasting impact Moorlands has made on the local community.”
