Future of Key Frome Regeneration Site Hangs in the Balance Amid Mayday Saxonvale Funding Delays

The future of the Saxonvale brownfield regeneration site in Frome remains uncertain as persistent funding challenges threaten to stall its redevelopment. Nearly nine months after Somerset Council agreed to sell the site to Mayday Saxonvale—a group committed to delivering affordable housing, commercial spaces, and leisure facilities—the official sale has yet to be completed.

Mayday Saxonvale’s struggle to secure adequate financing from its partners has delayed progress, prompting the council to weigh alternative options. While council leaders reaffirm that Mayday’s vision remains the best for the site, they are prepared to place Saxonvale back on the open market if new funding cannot be swiftly secured.

Councillor Dawn Denton highlighted community frustrations during the council’s executive meeting on October 1 in Taunton, emphasizing the stagnation’s negative impact on much-needed regeneration and economic growth in Frome.

In response, Councillor Mike Rigby, responsible for economic development and planning, acknowledged the ongoing “complex and challenging” negotiations with Mayday Saxonvale. He confirmed that the purchaser has not yet demonstrated sufficient financial backing to complete the acquisition but stressed the council’s commitment to responsible land use that benefits the community over the long term.

Rigby explained that Mayday’s innovative approach—which involves recycling profit back into the development—presents a unique opportunity, maintaining that their offer represents ‘best consideration’ under the Local Government Act 1972 and is favorable for taxpayers and residents alike. However, contingency plans exist to re-market the site if Mayday fails to secure funding.

Council leader Bill Revans assured the public that any key decisions regarding Saxonvale’s future would take place locally in Frome rather than at County Hall, emphasizing transparency and community involvement.

Mayday Saxonvale director Paul Oster expressed gratitude for public patience and confirmed ongoing negotiations with alternative financial backers. He conveyed cautious optimism about a new funding strategy, underscoring the group’s dedication to delivering a sustainable, socially valuable development tailored to the needs of Frome.

As Saxonvale’s redevelopment hangs in the balance, Somerset Council and Mayday Saxonvale continue to work diligently to overcome financial hurdles and realize a project that promises meaningful benefits to the town.
