Future of Closed Somerset Pub Hangs in the Balance

The future of the Cheddar Valley Inn in Wells, Somerset, hangs in the balance as plans have been proposed to convert the closed pub into two residential properties. The owner of the pub, Red Oak Taverns, seeks to redevelop the 19th-century building into a two-bedroom and a one-bedroom home, as the establishment has been closed for over a year.

Previously, plans to construct homes on the site were refused, but the new proposal aims to repurpose the existing building to benefit the local economy. The planning application states that the new dwellings would bring consumers to the area, contributing to the vitality and viability of the settlement. According to the application, the pub is no longer economically viable, and the conversion to residential properties aligns with local policies.

The potential transformation has sparked discussions about the loss of public houses in the region. The Cheddar Valley Inn holds local significance, being the only remaining pub in the Burcott area with a traditional aesthetic dating back to the 19th century.
