Full Police Statement Released Following Violent Attack at Bridgwater Carnival

An abhorrent and unprovoked attack during the Bridgwater Carnival in Somerset has left a man in his late 20s with serious, potentially life-changing injuries. The assault took place on Bridgwater High Street at approximately 10:40 pm on Saturday, November 1, hours after the main carnival procession ended.

The victim was forcibly knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched in the face. He required emergency surgery due to a fractured cheekbone and damage around his right eye, which may result in him needing glasses permanently. Avon and Somerset Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect involved.

According to a police spokesperson, the attacker is described as a white man, about 6 feet tall, with short dark hair. At the time of the assault, he was wearing a black jacket, a hooded top, and blue jeans. Witnesses reported that the suspect fled the scene toward Angel Place accompanied by another man, described as white, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with short blond hair and wearing a grey coat.

Detective Constable Charlotte Couch emphasized the severity of the assault: “This was a disturbing incident where a man was violently attacked in front of a large crowd, suffering injuries that required urgent surgery. We urge anyone who was at Bridgwater Carnival during that time to help us identify those involved.”

While there is no evidence suggesting an ongoing threat to the public, authorities are committed to a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice. The Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival draws around 150,000 spectators annually, featuring illuminated carts, rides, concerts, and fireworks. Though the official procession ended earlier in the evening, the attack occurred several hours afterward amidst lingering crowds.
