Somerset head coach Jason Kerr expressed clear frustration and disappointment after their unbeaten run came to an end with a 75-run defeat against Yorkshire in the County Championship.
Despite conceding a first innings lead of 112, Yorkshire fought back strongly thanks to a remarkable all-round performance, particularly from Joe Root, who took 4-49 and played a key role with the ball.
Yorkshire’s imposing second innings total of 371 set Somerset a challenging target of 260 on a flat pitch. However, Somerset’s innings quickly faltered as they slipped to 21-3 and were eventually dismissed for 184 shortly after tea. Apart from Josh Thomas’s resilient 57, the batting lineup struggled against Yorkshire’s bowlers, including spinner Dom Bess, who claimed 4-60.

The defeat saw Somerset drop from the top spot in Division One to third place, trailing leaders Nottinghamshire by nine points. Kerr acknowledged the tough loss but remained optimistic about the team’s overall season performance.
“We are frustrated and disappointed, but we know we have played some brilliant cricket this season," Kerr said. “The opportunity we had this morning, on a docile surface that made us confident, really makes this feel like one that got away.
“A lot of credit must go to Yorkshire, who approached the game with exemplary focus. They effectively kept runs to a minimum early on, which was crucial.
“The key issue for us was the failure to build meaningful partnerships. Josh Thomas was outstanding and gave us hope, but once again, losing wickets at vital moments hurt us.
“In the first innings, we were in a position to dominate Yorkshire but couldn’t capitalize. It’s a setback, especially with injuries affecting the squad, but it is encouraging to see young players stepping up.”
