‘Frustration and disappointment’ as Somerset beaten by Yorkshire

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr expressed deep frustration and disappointment after their County Championship defeat to Yorkshire brought an end to their unbeaten run this season.

Joe Root was instrumental in Yorkshire’s comeback, taking four wickets and helping secure a remarkable 75-run victory. Yorkshire reversed a first-innings deficit of 112 to set Somerset a challenging target of 260 runs on a flat, batsman-friendly pitch.

Somerset’s chase faltered early, collapsing to 21-3 and eventually being bowled out for 184 shortly after tea. Root finished with figures of 4-49, and spinner Dom Bess supported strongly with 4-60. Despite a resilient 57 from Josh Thomas, Somerset’s batting lineup struggled to build substantial partnerships.

The defeat saw Somerset drop from the top of the Division One table to third place, now nine points behind leaders Nottinghamshire, earning just four points from this match.

Kerr reflected on the narrow margins: “We are frustrated and disappointed, but we know we have played some brilliant cricket this season. The opportunity we had this morning on a docile surface, which made us very confident, means it does feel like one that got away.”

He praised Yorkshire’s disciplined approach: “They knew they had to keep runs dry early on, and they did that really effectively.”

Kerr also acknowledged Somerset’s missed chances to build meaningful partnerships and highlighted the strong contributions from younger players stepping up amid injury challenges. “Josh Thomas had an outstanding game and looked to be putting us back in control. But then we lost wickets again. In our first innings, we were in a position to bat Yorkshire out of the game. We failed to take it. It’s a setback, but some young players are stepping up, which is great to see.”
