Frome’s Market Yard: Transforming a Community Hub into a Cultural Gem

Frome’s Market Yard is more than just a car park—it’s a bustling heart of the town where locals and visitors converge. Nestled by the riverside and surrounded by cherished landmarks such as Frome Library, the Cheese and Grain venue, Canoe Club, Black Swan Arts, and Frome Museum, Market Yard is a crucial gateway to the town’s thriving independent businesses and cultural life.

Now, Frome Town Council is on a mission to revitalize Market Yard, transforming it into an inviting and lively space that reflects the town’s unique spirit. They’re seeking ideas from everyone, from bold visionary projects to simple improvements that would enhance everyday experiences.

Community members have already contributed inspiring suggestions. Ideas include creating a riverside amphitheatre for outdoor performances and a shipping container food court to offer distinctive dining experiences. One resident imagined a “river-level boardwalk” along the bank where people could relax, dipping their feet into the water on warm days—bringing residents closer to the natural beauty of the river.

Others envision beautifying the area with planters, sculptures, trees, and art installations, continuing the vibrant street art that has already energized parts of the town. Some suggest transforming part of the car park into a welcoming green space or market area to make Market Yard an even more attractive place to gather, shop, and socialize.

Residents are also encouraged to propose events and activities that complement the cultural venues nearby, ensuring Market Yard becomes an engaging hub for all ages.

Cllr Nick Dove emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Market Yard has incredible potential. It’s often the first place people see when arriving in Frome, so making it welcoming and lively will benefit the whole town centre. We want this to be a collaborative effort where residents’ ideas shape the future of Market Yard.”
