Frome Town Unveils Magical Christmas Lights Switch-On and Lantern Parade Details

Although autumn is still in full swing, Frome Town Council is already embracing the festive spirit, inviting residents and visitors alike to join in one of the town’s most cherished events of the year: the annual Christmas Light Switch-On.

This year’s celebration will take place on Friday, November 21, in the heart of the town centre. The evening promises a captivating mix of festivities, led by the Mayor of Frome, Councillor Anita Collier. Having missed the opportunity to participate in the 2020 public lights switch-on due to pandemic restrictions, Councillor Collier is especially eager to bring the community together once again.

Frome’s Mayor commented, “The Light Switch-On is more than just the start of the festive season—it’s a moment that unites our town. Whether you join the lantern parade or simply enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, there’s joy for everyone. I’m thrilled to see Frome glowing brightly this November.”

This year’s celebrations will continue to highlight community, creativity, and festive sparkle. The beloved lantern parade, growing in popularity each year, will feature beautifully handcrafted lanterns commencing from the top of North Parade. Accompanied by the lively rhythms of a Samba Band, crowds can anticipate a lively and joyful procession.

Festivities kick off just before 6 PM with the Mayor’s arrival, culminating in the official lights switch-on at approximately 6:45 PM. Visitors can also enjoy a range of festive food and drink stalls, as well as a special appearance by Father Christmas.

Central to the event is lantern making, an activity that encourages creativity and community spirit. This year’s lantern theme is ‘Peace,’ symbolized through beautiful dove and heart designs. Whether novices or experienced crafters, participants can join community workshops leading up to the event, or take home lantern kits to create their own at leisure.

Mel Day and Aliss Vaas from Frome Lanterns shared their enthusiasm: “The dove’s message of peace is simple yet powerful, especially during the holiday season. We’re excited to see the streets filled with dove and heart lanterns, lighting up North Parade beautifully. Workshops for families, communities, and adults, as well as sessions for middle school students, guarantee a joyful and inclusive experience.”

Local schools and classes can also order materials and instructions through the Frome Lanterns website for collaborative crafting sessions.
