In a tightly contested match at the Special Effect Stadium, George Dowling scored a decisive goal moments after coming off the bench, handing Frome Town a narrow victory over Bath City and denying them their first away clean sheet of the 2026 season.
The winning goal came late in what had been a largely uneventful game, with both sides struggling to make a clear impact. It marked the first league encounter between these rivals since 1906, witnessed by a sizeable crowd eager to see local bragging rights settled.
Early on, Bath City almost took the lead when Matt Bowman struck across goal in the opening minute, following a well-executed long throw by Joe Raynes. Frome responded with attempts of their own, including a half-clearance from Jordan Tillson that allowed Callum Gould to shoot, though his effort was deflected wide.

The first half saw a number of cautions for Frome players, including Zac Drew who was booked for simulation after a fall under challenge from Kieran Parselle. The play lacked quality, characterised by misplaced attempts and cautious play from both teams, concluding scoreless at the interval.
Bath introduced attacking opportunities shortly after the restart. Alex Fisher had a promising chance but failed to capitalize on a wayward pass from Sam Teale. Meanwhile, Frome’s keeper Harvey Wiles-Richards had to stay vigilant following set-piece threats from Bath, making important saves to keep the game level.
In response to offensive struggles, Bath’s manager Scott Bartlett made a triple substitution aimed at boosting their attack, but the changes failed to create clear-cut chances, and final passes often fell short.
Conversely, Frome’s substitutions had an immediate impact. Substitute Sam Meakes maintained pressure with a long throw leading to Dowling’s winning shot from 12 yards, which took a deflection off a defender to wrong-foot Wiles-Richards.
Bath had a late chance to equalise when Kieran Parselle reached a cross at the back post, but Kyle Phillips stood firm to block twice, preserving Frome’s lead.
Reflecting on the defeat, Bartlett expressed his frustration but acknowledged the need for improvement. “There’s a really good group here, but four or five players need to raise their standards quickly, or personnel changes will be necessary,” he said. “We competed hard but lacked quality on the ball, and I must credit Frome for beating us today.”
This match marked Bath City’s second consecutive loss following their recent defeat to Uxbridge, starting the season with mixed results after an initial strong performance in the National League South. Bartlett described the current situation as “disappointing,” emphasising the need for greater dominance and resilience.
Looking ahead, Bath City face Weymouth at Twerton Park in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round. Weymouth have enjoyed a strong start to their campaign, and Bartlett anticipates a challenging game but remains optimistic. “We’ll make sure we’re fully prepared and ready for what should be another big crowd,” he commented.
Frome Town’s victory not only brings them local bragging rights but also highlights the competitive nature of the league and the fine margins that can decide fixtures between close rivals.
