A recent break-in at an independent shop in Frome has brought renewed attention to escalating concerns about crime and safety in Somerset’s rural communities.
Anna Sabine, MP for Frome and East Somerset, teamed up with Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Clare Moody for a community walkabout in Frome. Their mission was to engage directly with residents about critical issues such as rural crime, anti-social behaviour, and the safety of women.
During their visit, the pair stopped at Assembly, a local store on Catherine Hill, where they met shop owner Anthony Hick. The store was recently the victim of a break-in, which left its front glass shattered and resulted in the theft of thousands of pounds worth of stock.

Ms Sabine highlighted the importance of this meeting in ensuring that the concerns of smaller towns and villages are not overlooked by authorities.
“Frome and East Somerset lie on the edge of the Avon and Somerset policing area, and sometimes residents of Frome, Midsomer Norton, Westfield, and the surrounding villages feel forgotten,” she said.
“I was pleased to bring the Commissioner here to hear firsthand from those affected by crime and anti-social behaviour. We also discussed the urgent need for increased rural policing and visibility. It was a positive and constructive conversation with Clare, and I will keep pushing for the resources our communities need to feel safe.”
This visit is part of Ms Sabine’s wider commitment to prioritising safety and improving policing in the rural and semi-rural areas of her constituency, including Radstock, Midsomer Norton, and nearby villages.
