Frome School Commended for Exceptional Inclusion and Individualized Support

Christ Church First School in Frome has received high praise from Ofsted for its outstanding approach to inclusion, recognizing and valuing each child’s unique needs. The school, which serves a significantly higher proportion of disadvantaged pupils than average, was celebrated in an inspection report published on March 2 for fostering an environment where all pupils thrive.

Inspectors highlighted the calm and inclusive atmosphere, noting that staff build strong, trusting relationships with pupils and their families. They identify barriers to learning and tailor their support to ensure every child can succeed. “Pupils and staff are proud to be part of their school community,” the report stated, describing a genuine sense of belonging throughout the school.

From early years through later grades, pupils engage positively with one another in both structured and social settings. Children enjoy activities such as cycling and share family-style lunches that promote friendly conversation and harmony during break times.

Ofsted singled out the school’s commitment to treating every child as a unique individual. Leaders possess a deep understanding of each pupil’s needs, especially in supporting those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This dedication bolsters pupils’ confidence and self-esteem.

Notably, over 70% of pupils at Christ Church qualify for free school meals, far exceeding the national average of 26.3%. The school also has a significantly higher proportion of pupils with an education, health and care (EHC) plan—approximately 15% compared to the 3.5% national average—and almost 27% of pupils have SEND.

Teachers adapt their methods effectively to support SEND learners, while the breakfast club offers a calm and positive start to the day. Leadership is described as driven and aspirational, with high expectations especially for disadvantaged pupils and those with additional needs. Every decision prioritizes the best interests of pupils.

The curriculum is ambitious and generally well-delivered, though inspectors recommend further staff development to enhance support for children’s communication skills and to deepen pupils’ subject knowledge across the curriculum.

Overall, Christ Church First School met expectations in all evaluated areas, including achievement, curriculum, attendance and behaviour, early years provision, inclusion, leadership and governance, as well as personal development and wellbeing.

Headteacher Joe Beament expressed pride in the report, emphasizing the school’s culture of trust, safety, and support that enables every child to succeed. Nikki Edwards, CEO of Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust, praised the school’s leadership and teamwork, highlighting how the school embodies values of care, equity, and ambition for all pupils.
