Frome Fire Evacuees Receive Outpouring of Community Support

The Frome community has shown remarkable solidarity following a major fire at a block of flats on Edmund Park Estate, which left residents of nine flats temporarily displaced. Within hours of the blaze, dozens of kind-hearted locals took to social media to offer clothing, pet supplies, and other necessities to those affected.

One concerned resident posted in a public Facebook group, “I have lots of clothes, warm jumpers, jackets, dresses, pajamas, and boots/shoes to offer anyone in need.” Another volunteer extended help for pets, sharing, “I have indoor hutches, runs, accessories, pet beds, bowls, blankets, towels, and pet food available.”

The fire erupted just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, causing significant smoke, fire, and water damage that compromised the building’s structure and led to the collapse of part of the roof. Residents were advised to evacuate immediately for their safety.

Frome Town Council has stepped in to coordinate assistance efforts. They are urging anyone affected to contact the Town Hall for essential supplies, which will be delivered by Fair Frome volunteers. Contact details are available for those seeking help: call 01373 465757, email [email protected], or visit the front desk at Christchurch Street West.

To support evacuees, the Key Centre’s pop-up Winter Cafe on Feltham Lane offers a welcoming warm space with free refreshments, lunch, and reliable Wi-Fi, perfect for working or keeping children entertained. This service runs daily throughout December and January.

Additionally, Fair Frome’s ‘Food at Five’ provides a designated warm venue at Trinity Church Hall from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., serving hot meals and desserts with accommodation for dietary needs. This initiative also operates at the Key Centre on Mondays and Frome Cricket Club on Wednesdays.

Cllr Fiona Barrows, Chairman and Leader of Frome Town Council, expressed deep gratitude for the community’s swift response and ongoing support. She also advised residents to avoid donating large quantities or bulky items for now, as efforts focus on ensuring displaced families have warmth, clothing, food, and reassurance while further plans are arranged with Selwood Housing, the building’s owner.

The town council remains committed to keeping the public informed and encourages those able to respond to specific requests promptly. The Town Hall is open weekdays for support from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.
