Frome Town Council has reached a historic milestone following the recent by-election in Market Ward, Somerset, where women secured a majority of seats for the first time ever.
Lyndsey Mayhew, representing the Independents for Frome, won the by-election with 55 percent of the vote, tipping the council’s balance to female majority. Her election marks a significant moment for the town’s governance and community representation.
Ms. Mayhew, a lifelong Somerset resident and Frome local since 2019, expressed enthusiasm about deepening her community involvement. “I’ve always been drawn to Frome’s strong sense of community,” she said. “I’m excited to serve our wonderful town and ensure every voice is heard. I’m grateful to everyone who supported me and the Independents for Frome.”

Her diverse background spans journalism, communications, event management, and extensive volunteer work. She co-founded Canteen, a pay-what-you-can restaurant, volunteered with Active and in Touch, and served 14 years as an Independent Visitor for children in care. Additionally, she produces the ‘Hello Frome’ podcast and radio show on Frome FM, highlighting local stories through personal interviews.
Council Chair and leader Fiona Barrows warmly welcomed Ms. Mayhew’s arrival, emphasizing her thoughtful and empathetic approach. “Lyndsey’s energy and dedication will be invaluable in representing Market Ward alongside Mark Dorrington,” Barrows said.
She also highlighted the council’s historic shift: “For the first time, Frome Town Council has more female councillors than male—a watershed moment for our community. It’s vital that local councils reflect diverse voices and ensure pathways to leadership are truly inclusive.”
Ms. Mayhew is set to officially join the council at its full meeting on Wednesday, October 29, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
