Huish Episcopi Academy in Langport has made a remarkable turnaround. Just two years after being rated ‘Inadequate’ by Ofsted in 2022, the school now enjoys a glowing reputation as a “happy, positive and safe environment where pupils thrive,” according to the latest Ofsted report released last week.
Inspectors praised the school’s culture, noting that pupils, including those in the sixth form, feel proud to attend. The report highlights a transformed atmosphere: “The school’s core values of respect, ambition, and resilience are exemplified by staff and reflected in pupils’ behaviour. Incidents of bullying are handled promptly and effectively.”
Students are encouraged to share their concerns openly, creating a supportive community where attendance has notably improved. Serving around 1,250 pupils aged 11 to 18, Huish Episcopi stands out for its inclusive approach. Teachers actively engage with all students, including young carers and those with family members in the Armed Forces.

The school’s leadership is committed to student wellbeing and personal development. Specific initiatives, such as support groups for young carers and tailored programs for children with relatives in the military, foster a sense of belonging. Exciting opportunities like the Aspire programme — which recently included a trip to China — further enhance pupils’ experiences.
Academic achievement has also risen. The report confirms that all students, including those disadvantaged, perform well. Their high-quality work across subjects prepares them effectively for sixth form or other future paths.
Principal Katie Boyes expressed pride in the school’s progress: “It is fantastic to receive this recognition and endorsement from Ofsted. Our students, staff, families, and governors have all played vital roles in this transformation. We deeply appreciate the ongoing support as we continue to build on these achievements.”
Ofsted now provides detailed assessments across multiple categories instead of a single overall rating. Huish Episcopi excelled in leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing, while meeting expectations in curriculum, teaching, behaviour, inclusion, attendance, and post-16 provision.
This report marks an inspiring chapter in Huish Episcopi Academy’s journey — from a school once struggling to one that fosters ambition and success for every pupil.
