From Fillings to Frosting: Bridgwater Dentist’s Showstopping Cakes Win Hearts

While the Great British Bake Off captivates viewers nationwide, Dr. Laxmi Hegde, a general dentist at mydentist Bridgwater, has already earned star baker status among her loved ones and colleagues. Known for her intricate cakes and scrumptious cupcakes, Laxmi’s culinary creations regularly brighten the workplace.

Her baking journey began during the first COVID-19 lockdown in May 2020, while she was on maternity leave. Inspired by a surge of baking enthusiasts on social media, she started experimenting in the kitchen. “At first, I thought baking was similar to cooking and didn’t follow recipes, adding random ingredients without measurements—it was a disaster!” she recalled. With practice and proper recipes, her skills blossomed, and baking soon became a beloved pastime.

One standout masterpiece was the four-layer vanilla sponge cake she made for her son’s first birthday, adorned with beautifully striped buttercream decorations. “That cake holds a special place for me,” Laxmi shared.

Beyond creativity, baking offers Laxmi invaluable moments of calm amidst her busy life balancing two children, postgraduate studies, and dental practice. “Baking is like therapy — it relaxes me. Plus, dentistry and baking share common ground: both demand patience and a steady hand.”

Her colleagues at mydentist Bridgehouse are full of praise. Practice manager Leanne Villers remarked, “Laxmi is humble about her baking, but her cakes are magnificent. Bringing cupcakes for the team brightens our day and never fails to bring smiles.”

Although Laxmi isn’t competing on this year’s Bake Off, her team hopes to encourage her application soon. For now, they’re delighted to enjoy her delectable treats at the practice.
