From Dump to Nature: Somerset’s Remarkable Transformation

A Somerset rubbish dump has been given a new lease on life as it has been transformed into a thriving nature reserve. The Carymoor Environmental Trust spearheaded the rejuvenation of the old landfill site, which had been previously isolated due to its remote location.

Fortunately, the site has now been connected to full fiber broadband, thanks to Wessex Internet’s three-year fiber build initiative in rural South Somerset. Over 120 schools annually visit the center for outdoor education experiences, but the lack of reliable connectivity had hindered the potential for indoor learning activities.

Rupert Farthing, Chief Executive of Carymoor Environmental Trust, expressed his relief at the upgrade, stating, “We were a communications black hole due to our remote location, surrounded only by farmland. Prior to the fiber connection, our broadband was incredibly slow, with a dated copper line. Thanks to this development, it’s a fantastic transformation.”

The recent installation of fiber broadband by Wessex Internet has significantly improved operations at the Trust, making it easier for staff and enhancing the offerings for visitors. For the first time, the center is equipped to provide Wi-Fi for meeting room rentals.

“People expect a good internet connection. With the improved connectivity, online meetings are no longer a concern. It’s a phenomenal change that has opened up a range of possibilities,” Rupert added.

The reliable internet connection has substantially benefited the charity’s operations, eliminating concerns about connectivity and streamlining business activities.
