Four-Month Roadworks Begin on A39 Near Clarks Village Shopping Centre

Visitors to Clarks Village shopping centre in Somerset should prepare for temporary traffic disruptions as major roadworks commence on the A39 Westway in Street. Somerset Council revealed in late November 2025 that six sets of aging traffic lights along this busy stretch will be replaced due to their nearing end of life.

Since January 6, temporary traffic lights have been operational at the Farm Road junction, with installation ongoing at the remaining sites. The extensive project, which also includes resurfacing and active travel enhancements, is expected to conclude by late April 2026. Occasional evening and overnight road closures will be necessary to complete the work.

Each set of traffic signals being replaced has been in service for over 30 years and is at risk of failure if not updated promptly. This initiative is part of Somerset Council’s wider programme to upgrade outdated traffic lights across the county, with recent improvements in Bridgwater, Shepton Mallet, Taunton, Wells, and Yeovil.

The temporary traffic lights employ ‘intelligent’ technology designed to mimic current signal timings, aiming to reduce traffic delays during construction. The project involves significant excavation to remove old ducting, wiring, and traffic heads before installing new systems.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, acknowledged the challenges ahead: “These junctions are very busy, and this vital work will replace outdated equipment, ensuring reliable signals for the next 30 years. We recognise there may be disruption during peak times, including school runs and busy shopping periods, but our contractor Octavius is committed to minimising inconvenience.”

The A39 is a crucial artery in Somerset, connecting major towns including Bridgwater, Street, Glastonbury, and Wells, and serving as a key route for freight transport throughout the county.

Towards the end of the project, a lengthy section between the Street roundabout and the Westway roundabout will be resurfaced. These works will occur during a limited number of evening and overnight closures, with updates and any schedule changes posted on the official Somerset Council roadworks portal.

An important addition to the scheme is a new shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, linking Farm Road underpass with surrounding paths. This element is funded by Active Travel England under the Department for Transport. Originally, this funding was intended for an improved cycle route between Dunster and Carhampton, a £1.5 million project cancelled in December 2025 due to logistical issues. The funding was reallocated to enhance active travel infrastructure in Street instead.

These improvements aim to create a safer, more efficient travel environment for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike throughout Somerset.
