Former Yeovil HMO Set to Revert to Care Home Pending Council Approval

Tyndale House, located at 36 Preston Road near Yeovil town centre, could soon transition back into a registered care home following a recent application to Somerset Council. The property originally functioned as a care home until its closure in 2019 under Carlauren Group’s management.

After its closure, Tyndale House was acquired by Tyndale Ltd, which gained planning permission in 2021 to convert it into an 18-bed house of multiple occupation (HMO) during the pandemic. Currently operating as an HMO with eight residents, the facility has effectively been run as a care home by Redleif Care since reopening in August 2021, despite lacking official registration with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The move to revert Tyndale House into a fully registered care home comes after insurance challenges linked to COVID-19 led to the initial decision to register it as an HMO. A spokesperson explained that the arrangement allowed them to provide care under assured short-hold tenancies (ASTs) with appropriate insurance while meeting regulatory standards. However, following discussions with the CQC, they have been advised to formally register as a care home and update their insurance accordingly.

Notably, no physical alterations to the building or changes in staffing and traffic levels are planned as part of this transition. The property is conveniently located near Yeovil Hospital and local amenities, maintaining its suitability for care services.

Somerset Council is expected to decide on the application by early autumn, with the future of Tyndale House soon set to be determined.
