Former Somerset Pub to Reopen as Mexican Fusion Restaurant with Live Music

The Prickly Pear, a well-known former pub on High Street in Bruton, Somerset, is set to reopen as a Mexican fusion restaurant following extensive building renovations and licensing changes. After closing abruptly in September 2023 due to the building’s poor condition, the owners obtained planning permission in January from Somerset Council to refurbish the listed premises.

The updated licence reflects a new layout that has significantly increased seating capacity and improved outdoor spaces. Both garden areas have been relevelled, and a retractable roof has been installed in the side garden, allowing year-round customer use regardless of weather.

The revised licence permits live music daily from noon to midnight and recorded music from 9 a.m., extending entertainment hours beyond the previous licence. Alcohol service will now begin at 10 a.m., two hours earlier than before, with a midnight cut-off remaining in place.

Local residents voiced concerns at a virtual council licensing meeting on September 23, fearing the increased hours and music would lead to greater noise and antisocial behavior. Some reported past disturbances from low-frequency bass and late-night activity connected to the venue.

In response, Prickly Pear director Rupert Toms highlighted acoustic improvements including insulation to reduce vibrations, underfloor heating, and air conditioning to maintain controlled indoor environments. The back garden’s opening hours will be limited to mitigate noise.

General manager Ross Nicol emphasized collaboration with police and licensing authorities to ensure a well-managed establishment focused on dining. Staff training on noise and behavior policies will be implemented to minimize disruptions.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary raised no formal objections and agreed on conditions to accompany the new licence. Following deliberation, the council’s licensing sub-committee approved the licence change with police-recommended conditions.

While The Prickly Pear has not announced a reopening date, recent social media updates indicate ongoing work, particularly at the venue entrance.
