Former Royal Marine from Bath Embraces His True Passion for Art

Simon Haselock, a Bath resident with a distinguished 50-year career as a Royal Marine and an expert in conflict resolution, is embarking on a new chapter—his first art exhibition in Bath this December.

Having served and advised governments in some of the world’s most volatile regions—including Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Bosnia, Sudan, and more—Simon is renowned for sharing his experiences through national and international talks. Yet beneath the medals and military accolades lies a lifelong passion: art inspired by the natural world.

After decades of navigating global conflicts, Simon has returned to his artistic roots, creating evocative landscapes and still lifes that celebrate the countryside’s beauty and bounty. His work primarily features vibrant depictions of flowers, fruit, and trees, with a special fascination for autumnal colors in woods and forests. In addition to realistic portrayals, he is exploring more abstract interpretations of organic forms, adding new depth to his creations.

While he has so far steered clear of illustrating his time abroad, Simon is considering a series focused on Sudan, Somalia, and Afghanistan—an artistic effort to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles in these countries.

Simon’s debut exhibition will be held at his home near Bath city centre from Thursday, December 4 through Saturday, December 6. Art enthusiasts are warmly invited to visit, share feedback, and engage directly with the artist. Those interested can RSVP by emailing him at [email protected].
