Former Pub Near Bristol Airport Set to Become New Greggs Outlet

A new Greggs bakery could soon open on the A38 near Bristol Airport, replacing the former Waggon and Horses pub. The popular bakery chain has submitted a planning application to North Somerset Council proposing the development of a new branch at this site.

Greggs promises the new outlet will create 20 jobs, including two full-time and 18 part-time positions, offering a boost to local employment. The planning documents highlight the potential benefits to the rural community by expanding retail options and supporting the local economy.

However, the plans have met some resistance from local residents. Three objections have been lodged, raising concerns about increased traffic and safety on an already busy road. One neighbour warned that visibility when exiting the site is poor, citing three serious accidents — including a fatality — on this stretch of the A38.

Another resident expressed worries that adding a bakery in this location would worsen existing problems such as traffic congestion, pollution, litter, and inconsiderate parking in nearby villages. They fear this development might contribute to transforming the area into a suburb of Bristol, altering its rural character.

Previously, Greggs had proposed a drive-through outlet at this location, but those plans were withdrawn in 2023 due to concerns that queues of cars could extend onto the highway. The new application notably does not include a drive-through service, in response to these concerns.

As the council reviews the application, the debate highlights the challenge of balancing economic development with maintaining road safety and preserving local community character.
