A former Dorset Police officer has been found guilty of gross misconduct after he pursued a sexual relationship with a domestic violence victim, violating professional standards and abusing his position of trust.
PC James McClements, who resigned from Dorset Police prior to the misconduct proceedings, pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office on April 10. The misconduct panel held at Dorset Police headquarters in Winfrith on May 19 confirmed that McClements breached multiple standards of professional behavior, including discreditable conduct, abuse of authority, lack of respect and courtesy, and failure in duties and responsibilities.
The panel concluded that had McClements remained with the force, he would have been dismissed. Consequently, he has been placed on the police barred list, barring him from ever serving as a police officer again.

Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell condemned McClements’ actions, emphasizing the gravity of betraying the trust of a vulnerable woman seeking help from the police. She stated, “This former officer pursued a sexual relationship with a vulnerable woman who was putting her trust in the police, and this trust was broken. This behaviour is unacceptable and does not reflect our Force’s values.”
Farrell reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity and to protect vulnerable individuals in the community. She praised the robust investigation conducted by the Professional Standards Department, which ensured that McClements faced appropriate consequences.
The Dorset Police encourages the public to report any unethical or unacceptable conduct by officers to help maintain transparency and accountability within the service.
